Sunrise Mart seen from the upstairs dining area

A long time ago I wandered into Sunrise Mart and was astounded by it’s deli-esque nature. It’s uncommon to find a delicious Udon/Ramen/Soba place that also sells all manner of grocery items, from crackers and snacks, to noodles, to an aisle solely focused on matcha, such as green tea kit-kats. The space is cramped, but only because it is filled with so many things. I really recommend going around 1:30 if you can hold off on lunch that long because it’s really fun to shop around. But when it’s crowded, you feel kind of guilty taking up space in the aisles. Bring some pocky back for your office. They will love you.

I come to Sunrise Mart for the Tonkotsu Ramen. This porky bowl is warm and fragrant- exactly what your belly craves when noon comes around. I’ve had it a few times now, and never once have I had a tough pork incident. The meat is always tender and flavorful, and the broth is rich, though, perhaps, a tad over salted every once and a while. Ask for less salt if you are sensitive to that like I am. They also have shoyu (soy) and miso ramen, as well as a selection of pre-made dishes like bibimbap, japchae, and omu-rice (omelette stuffed with rice and veggies, it’s pretty good!).

Some other things to try...There’s this canned coffee drink called Pokka Milk Coffee. It’s super cheap, weirdly strong for coffee in a can, and surprisingly good. The last time I had it, my hyperactivity shot up to spin-rapidly-around-in-office-chair level, and then I crashed after pretty hard. Maybe I’m just susceptible to caffeine/sugar, but give this stuff works for that late afternoon slump. They have beer, if you like the beer and lunch combo. And for dessert I always go for daifuku, which is red bean paste wrapped in a glutinous rice dough. The cheesecake is damn good though- split it with your friend and you won’t be sorry, I guarantee it.
